CHOICE Review

Composed of essays each devoted to an aspect of sport or leisure, this guide has a decidedly UK focus, although resources it covers are international in scope. An overview describes online databases (e.g., SPORT, CH, Jul'87, and SportSearch) and the perfectly named SPORT Discus (all three produced by Sport Information Research Centre, Ottowa); centers and special libraries; abstracting and indexing services; and major journals. There follow chapters on, e.g., statistical sources, government information sources and statutory bodies (UK only), sports science and medicine, history and sociology of sport, individual sports, the Olympics, physical education and fitness, and coaching. Three additional chapters discuss European, North American (mostly Canadian), and Australian research sources. The chapters, which cite a highly selective group of sources, are prepared by experts, most of them directors of institutes or research centers for sport, sport medicine, or leisure. Shoebridge, formerly librarian at Sport Documentation Centre, University of Birmingham, has also published Women in Sport: A Select Bibliography (CH, Sep'86). Contributors should have been held to greater standardization of format and categories of information. The chapter on individual sports is inexplicably brief. The book's price and UK emphasis make it appropriate for sports collections in Canada and the UK, but it can be ignored by all but very large US sports collections. J. A. Adams; SUNY at Buffalo
