CHOICE Review

Like other inclusive edited collections, this volume suffers from unevenness. Its first half does less well what Jane Bowers and Judith Tick accomplished in the collection they edited, Women Making Music (CH, Jul'86) where the scholarship was, partly because of its newness, more interesting and coverage more detailed the Western art tradition only, 1150-1950. The second half is spotty in its ethnomusicological coverage Europe and the British Empire, and a general "non-Western" chapter. Particularly useful in the American section is a chapter on North America since 1920 by J. Michele Edwards and Leslie Lassetter: it is comprehensive and so little else exists outside of monographs. The "Blues and Jazz" chapter considers only African-American women and relegates the important area of ragtime to a footnote. The one chapter on feminist aesthetics is too general to be of much use. Readers should familiarize themselves with Susan McClary's Feminine Endings (CH, Jun'91) for this perspective. The bibliographies are adequate. The general list of recordings is limited to the set prepared to accompany Historical Anthology of Music by Women, ed. by James R. Briscoe (1987). Both public and academic libraries at all levels.-J. P. Ambrose, University of Vermont
