Summary: Along with plan and elevation, section is one of the essential representational techniques of architectural design; among architects and educators, debates about a project's section are common and often intense. Until now, however, there has been no framework to describe or evaluate it. Manual of Section fills this void. Paul Lewis, Marc Tsurumaki, and David J. Lewis have developed seven categories of section, revealed in structures ranging from simple one-story buildings to complex structures featuring stacked forms, fantastical shapes, internal holes, inclines, sheared planes, nested forms, or combinations thereof. To illustrate these categories, the authors construct sixty-three intricately detailed cross-section perspective drawings of built projects - many of the most significant structures in international architecture from the last one hundred years - based on extensive archival research. Manual of Section also includes smart and accessible essays on the history and uses of section -- Bookseller's description

CHOICE Review

This book represents a great start on an alternative interior compositional history of architecture fostered by computerization: sectional analysis. The book begins with a dense, 15-page introduction to the authors' own typology of section (extrusion, nests, holes, shear, shape, incline, stack, hybrids) and a 15-page historical account of section drawing since the Middle Ages. The body of the book is devoted to illustrating and explaining significant buildings around the world over the past 100 years. The authors (who practice in New York City as LTL) include a chapter on their own work over the past 20 years. Through this book, one does appreciate Adolph Loos's idea of Raumplan (space plan) as a rich and rigid stew. Practically speaking, however, much needs to be added to make this book more useful: plans, photographs, bibliography, topography, and directionals. As design flattens digitally and spreads globally (with everything else around the world), the history of architecture must follow and examine with greater acuity the counterpoint and meta-counterpoint between traditional and modern design. Summing Up: Recommended. With reservations. Graduate students, researchers/faculty, professionals. --Peter Samuel Kaufman, Boston Architectural College
