Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:
Now in a fully revised and updated second edition, Essentials of Performance Analysis in Sport is a comprehensive and authoritative guide to this core discipline of contemporary sport science. It introduces the fundamental theory of match and performance analysis, using real-world illustrative examples and data throughout, and explores the applied contexts in which analysis can have a significant influence on performance.
This second edition includes three completely new chapters covering the key emerging topics of dynamic systems, momentum and performance profiling, as well as updated coverage of core topics in the performance analysis curriculum such as:
designing notation systems analysing performance data qualitative analysis of technique time-motion analysis probability using feedback technologies performance analysis and coaching. With extended coverage of contemporary issues in performance analysis and contributions from leading performance analysis researchers and practitioners, Essentials of Performance Analysis in Sport is a complete textbook for any performance analysis course, as well as an invaluable reference for sport science or sport coaching students and researchers, and any coach, analyst or athlete looking to develop their professional insight.
Includes bibliographical references (pages 381-416) and index.
Introduction -- The importance of feedback to performance -- What is performance analysis? -- Providing information for teaching skills in sport -- Video-based technologies, substitution of reality and performance feedback -- An overview of the development of notation analysis -- The use of performance indicators in performance analysis -- Sports analysis -- How do we design simple systems? How to develop a notation system -- Examples of notation systems -- Analysis of notation data: reliability -- Qualitative biomechancial analysis of technique -- Applied motion analysis -- Probability analysis of notated events in sports contests: skill and chance -- Dynamic systems and 'perturbations' -- Momentum and 'hot hands' -- Performance profiling -- Rule changes in sport and the role of notation -- Notational analysis of coaching behavior -- Performance analysis in the media.

CHOICE Review
In this second edition of Essentials of Performance Analysis in Sport, Hughes (Univ. of British Columbia, Canada), Franks (emer., Cardiff Metropolitan Univ., UK), and their fellow contributors delve into designing notation systems, analyzing performance data, and using these tools to improve performance in both speed and technique. They go into specific detail about the use of feedback for performance improvements, and also provide a variety of methods for collecting data (for example, video technology), processing data, and analyzing data in both individual and team sport environments. This exceptional look into the world of biomechanics is delivered in a manner that will be accessible to a broad readership. The volume will complement Applied Anatomy and Biomechanics in Sport, ed. by Timothy Ackland, Bruce Elliott, and John Bloomfield (CH, Apr'09, 46-4509), because it takes simple biomechanical concepts and expands them to fit today's athletes. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty and professionals. --Caitlyn Pecinovsky, University of Wisconsin-MilwaukeeAuthor notes provided by Syndetics
Mike Hughes is Emeritus Professor of Performance Analysis at Cardiff Metropolitan University, UK, and a visiting professor at the Institute of Technology, Carlow, Ireland; Nottingham Trent University, UK; Otto von Guericke University, Germany; Edith Cowan University, Australia; University of Putra, Malaysia; and the University of California, Berkeley, USA. He is an accredited level 5 performance analyst (ISPAS), a BOA-registered performance analyst, and a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society. His professional consultancy has included work in squash, rugby, football and hockey, and his publications include the seminal performance analysis textbooks, Essentials of Performance Analysis and Notational Analysis of Sport (both with Ian Franks and published by Routledge).
Ian M. Franks is a Professor in the School of Kinesiology, University of British Columbia, Canada. His research is primarily concerned with the control and acquisition of human motor skills, and he is a leading authority in sport performance analysis and the analysis of coaching behaviour. Ian is a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Psychomotor Learning and Sport Psychology (SCAPPS) and a Fellow of the American Academy for Kinesiology and Physical Education (AAKPE). As well as numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, Ian is the co-editor and co-author (with Mike Hughes) of the seminal performance analysis textbooks, Essentials of Performance Analysis and Notational Analysis of Sport (both published by Routledge).
