CHOICE Review

Title notwithstanding, several essays in this volume are only tangentially about Irish Travellers. Chapters about Roma and the Chhara do not clarify the ethnicity and identity of Travellers, for example. An interview with Colum McCann, the author of the novel Zoli (2007), seems out of place. One chapter, "Writing Back into the Text," is so laden with the jargon of critical theory that many readers will be baffled. Rewritten, it could have served as an introduction to the whole book, or to a selection of essays written by Travellers. Still, the personal essays work well together and present perspectives that challenge categories such as "settled and unsettled" and stereotypic, damaging representations in the press and elsewhere. One fine chapter is called "Johnny Keenan and Aspects of the Traveller Musical Tradition." This book, though flawed, is another step in creating a voice that represents and celebrates the ethnicity and identity of Travellers and forwards concerns of Travellers and Irish identities. To the extent that the issues with which Travellers must grapple echo those faced by marginalized people elsewhere, including European Roma, comparison may be useful. But the strength of this collection is in the voices of the Travellers themselves. Summing Up: Recommended. All levels/libraries. L. De Danaan emerita, Evergreen State College
