Kirkus Book Review

Dunbar has put together 17 excerpts of Irish writings in reverse chronological order of publication, from 1941Ž96, aimed less at children than at adults studying children's literature. An introductory essay puts forth Dunbar's wish that children ten to twelve try out these samples, but the age group that would find Marita Conlon-McKenna's Fields of Home (1997) a compelling novel will find the four-page excerpt included here dull and unrevealing. The excerpt from Tom McCaughren's In Search of the Liberty Tree (1994) shows several characters involved in an encounter with British soldiers, but the stage is hardly set when a boy and his father are taken from their house; the last paragraph explains that the boy's mother is one of many women who is seeking her husband and son, leaving readers in a lurch. There are also pieces from works by Martin Wadell, Sam McBratney, and other writers who will be familiar to better readers, but the writing style becomes more dated as the stories increase in age. Brief biographies will steer interested readers to other examples of the contributors' works. (Anthology. 12+)
