Building on the first edition's reception (1996), this edition is the result of "research [that] has been continuous, involving not only journeys in Ireland but also to London." The first edition was based on Walter G. Strickland's A Dictionary of Irish Artists (1913), to which Snoddy added hundreds of entries. The second edition supplies more than 100 new entries, bringing the total to over 600, and expands the information about a number of artists whose first edition entries were limited. Snoddy points out that "the definition of 'Irish' remains debatable. Being born in Ireland and departing in childhood ... was not conducive to inclusion, unless ... the artist made a distinct effort [to] retain the link by exhibiting in Ireland." Each entry includes the name of the artist, birth and death dates, genres, a rather inclusive biography, how works are signed, a list of works, and a bibliography of writings about the artist and works. Scope is broad: entries include artists who work as painters, sculptors, designers, stained glass craftsmen, and many others. This definitive book is the most comprehensive work on 20th-century Irish artists. Highly recommended for all public and academic libraries, and for students and scholars in 20th-century Irish art.
