CHOICE Review

Bringing together papers presented at the International Society for Education through Art conference (Netherlands, 1990), this carefully edited text preserves the tone of an academic conference: overviews by distinguished scholars, well-written critical commentaries and summations, and authors' rejoinders combine to convey a sense of lively scholarly debate and engagement with key professional issues. The volume examines the problem of evaluation and assessment in art museums as well as in art education classrooms. Contributors' papers illustrate striking national differences in perspective on how learning, teaching, and program effectiveness should be appraised. Included are several detailed case studies describing innovative methodological and conceptual approaches to evaluation and assessment in the arts. The book is not a methods text; readers interested in learning how to plan and conduct assessment and evaluation projects should look elsewhere. It will be of particular interest to specialists in art education, museum education, and program evaluation. Undergraduate and graduate majors in art education, comparative education, teacher education, and museum studies will find the volume's overviews and bibliographies a good starting place. J. A.
