CHOICE Review

During the last 15 years, Donald Knuth's landmark computer program TeX has revolutionized mathematical typesetting and the international distribution of scientific documents. While TeX is a de facto standard having no serious competitors, its own open-ended nature has allowed a proliferation of "dialects," actually packages of "macros" built on top of the original program to amplify its power and simplify its use. AMS-LaTeX now unifies the two most important dialects, LaTeX and AMS-TeX. Recently, many books about TeX and LaTeX have become available besides the "classics," D. Knuth's TeXbook (1984) and L. Lamport's LaTeX: A Document Preparation System (1986; 2nd ed., 1994), but Gr"atzer's is the only book about AMS-LaTeX known to this reviewer. Almost all users of TeX variants will want to adopt AMS-LaTeX; thus the volume under review is, for the moment, essential. Fortunately, Gr"atzer addresses equally the needs of TeX neophytes and the seasoned users of Plain TeX, LaTeX, and AMS-TeX. A diskette containing examples from the book makes it easy to learn by experimentation. Highly recommended for advanced undergraduates through faculty. D. V. Feldman; University of New Hampshire
