CHOICE Review

Electronics author and freelance journalist Hickman did not design Analog Electronics as a textbook; rather, he tries to explain the subject using basic math. Unfortunately, the book falls short of this goal. The presentation is uneven and difficult to follow; e.g., an exponential curve is explained by referring to compounded interest. Only eight pages later, a derivative is presented without any explanation. The author has extensive experience that translates into inserted sentences, which offer historical perspective, add humor or present analogies--but these only divert from the continuity and make the inexperienced reader uncomfortable. Active components are introduced in chapter 3, but the reader never gets an intuitive feel for the operation. For example, the diode is presented without giving the circuit symbol or indicating the "on-off" nature of its operation; and in chapter 8, amplitude modulation is described in less than one page of text without any equations. The first three chapters present passive and active components and the basics of combining components; the remainder discusses applications. Though this book could provide some insights for those already familiar with the subject, it is not suitable for academic audiences. Professionals. M. S.
