CHOICE Review

Kay writes an excellent overview of the many processes for detecting, evaluating, and repairing the deterioration that may occur in reinforced concrete structures. He provides a brief, but adequate, review of the many types of deterioration that may attack this composite material. The testing and instrumentation used in evaluating potentially defective concrete is presented in a straightforward, yet descriptive manner. Some discussion is also provided on planning methods for completing a thorough structural evaluation, which is then followed by a short primer on statistical analysis. The reader should be familiar with the structural and material behavior of reinforced concrete to fully appreciate Kay's writing, but can use this book as a basis for further study of rehabilitation. The illustrations and references are good. An ideal work for upper-level undergraduate engineering students, graduate students, and practitioners interested in developing a basic knowledge in this area. T. Burns; Cincinnati Technical College
