Contents:
Benzene -- Addition Versus Electrophilic Substitution Reactions -- Orientation of Substitution in Benzene Derivatives -- Aryl Halides -- Aromatic Nitroso and Nitro Compounds -- Sulphonic Acids and Their Derivatives -- Phenols -- Aromatic Alcohols -- Aromatic Aldehydes, Acids, and Derivatives -- Polycyclic Arenes -- Small and Large Ring Systems
Summary: All the basic principles of the field of aromatic chemistry are clearly presented in this important account. Many compounds of industrial and biological significance are used as examples with consideration given to structure, reactions, and properties. Topics such as thermodynamic versus kinetic control and pericyclic reactions are also introduced. In addition to benzene and the classes of aromatic compounds derived from it, the text covers polycyclic arenes, and the small and large ring systems which are embraced by the wider definition of aromaticity. The text will be especially useful for courses in organic chemistry.

Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

All the basic principles of this important topic are clearly presented here in an account which takes as examples many compounds of industrial and biological significance. Consideration is given to the structure, reactions, and properties of benzene and classes of aromatic compounds derived from it, and topics such as thermodynamic versus kinetic control and pericyclic reactions are introduced. The text also covers polycyclic arenes and the small and large ring systems which are embraced by the wider definition of aromaticity.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 88) and index.

CHOICE Review

Sainsbury's book forms part of a series designed to provide students in their first course in organic chemistry with material that would normally be presented in the eight to ten lectures devoted to benzene, its derivatives, and its analogs. The book summarizes the fundamentals of aromatic chemistry and is based on the author's lectures to first- and second-year undergraduate students. Chapters deal with the definition of the aromatic character and the structure of benzene, reactions of arenes, electrophilic aromatic substitution (including orientation effects), nucleophilic aromatic substitution, substituted benzenes, polycyclic arenes, and annulenes. There are 25 problems to solve and 4 general references. Undergraduate and pre-professional students. J. Landesberg Adelphi University
