CHOICE Review
Anyone engaging in the purification of proteins would be well served by keeping a copy of Protein Purification on their bookshelves. This book is easy to read, well referenced, and examines the major methods of isolating proteins. The whole process is covered, from the selection of a suitable starting material, followed by the initial fractionation, and ultimately the techniques available and equipment useful in obtaining the desired final product. The theories behind the various types of chromatography and electrophoresis are discussed in some detail as well as their strengths and weaknesses. Tables containing values pertinent to the methods being discussed are thoughtfully provided. Additionally, examples of the use of the techniques using model proteins are given, along with illustrations documenting the progress of the purification. This book will provide the novice with a solid basis for planning a purification scheme and may compel an experienced individual to try unexplored ways to optimize a procedure already being employed. Any laboratory contemplating or practicing protein purification will gladly pay the price for this useful reference. Graduate; faculty; professionals. J. M.
