CHOICE Review

Covering the first quarter or semester of undergraduate introductory biology curriculum, this CD-ROM presents a review outline of the major textbooks currently in use. The authors include Audesirk, Campbell, Mader, Purves, Raven and Johnson, Solomon et al., Staff, and Gould/Keeton. Included are study guides from the relevant chapters in each of these texts, illustrations from the books, QuickTime movies with sound, and accompanying passages. Topics include chemistry/biochemistry, cell composition, cell cycle and inheritance, and molecular biology. Comparing the condensed selected chapters from the various texts, the material, illustrations, and explanations repeat one another; each text includes similar content, some in more detail than others. In addition to the textbook coverage, there are five independent minicourses, each of which examines the above listed topics. The graphics, which initially appear too small to read, are easily magnified with a mouse click, which facilitates closer examination of diagrams; however, the increased size frequently is accompanied by a decrease in resolution. The QuickTime films are useful, but some are repeated several times in different places, so they can become tiresome.[p]A section of challenging thought problems covering the areas of genetics, chemistry, energy, molecular biology, the cell, and mitosis/meiosis aid in analyzing the content and synthesizing the information. There is a useful index, along with an enrichment section that covers biological terminology, cancer, and classic science experiments. The computer program is well put together and simple and fast to operate, but there is much redundancy and the contents will not supplant the traditional book. Nonetheless, this reasonably priced and cleverly designed aid will enable undergraduate biology students to focus on areas that appear ambiguous and that need reinforcement, and will allow them to quickly scan through different texts to see if another presentation provides the required clarification.
