CHOICE Review

In the fast changing world of electronic commerce, books are generally at a disadvantage in supplying up-to-date information for professionals and students alike. This volume under review is no exception to this rule. The authors, academics and consultants explain certain aspects of the topic in a clear and coherent way (such as the section on electronic payment systems), but multiple author contributions result in a lack of continuity. There is much good information about how to set up shop on the Internet (e.g., marketing, electronic data interchange, network security, legal aspects, Web site hosting services), but the information is consolidated in an encyclopedia-type framework that makes it difficult to read in a sequential, cover-to-cover manner. Also, the book contains extensive references to Web sites and URLs, many of which are likely to change substantially, become dated, or disappear by next year. Although the book, which contains a brief glossary of technical terms, could be a useful reference or supplementary reading for upper-division and graduate students of e-commerce, it is most appropriate for practitioners.
