School Library Journal Review

Gr 8-10-This overview defines stress as a reaction to change and depression as an illness. It explains what happens when a person experiences either condition, and offers ways to cope. The text does not clearly differentiate between depression as a reaction to stress and depression as a serious illness. The list of stressors, which includes retirement, and of causes of depression, which includes childbirth, are general, and not directed at teens. There is a discussion of Type A and Type B personalities and stress, but in recent years that subject has been played down by U.S. psychiatrists. The book states that too much stress can cause ulcers, but that is an infectious disease caused by H. pylori. All therapies for depression are given equal space, even though electro-shock treatment is rarely an option for teens. Full-color photographs that show a range of ages appear throughout. Young people will find Gwen K. Packard's Coping with Stress (Rosen, 1997) more helpful in dealing with the situations they face. Bev Cobain's When Nothing Matters Anymore: A Survival Guide for Depressed Teens (Free Spirit, 1998) is a better book on that topic.-Martha Gordon, formerly at South Salem Library, NY (c) Copyright 2010. Horn Book Review

The high-energy pages in the books in this series are loaded with color photos, charts, bullet lists, sidebars, and comments by teens. A few Briticisms distract (most American teens won't find "good old baked beans and poached eggs" a tempting combo), and the healthy-living messages are a bit heavy, but the facts and presentation are solid.
