CHOICE Review

This concise, accessible, and lively volume provides both an animated view of dance in the 21st century and a good perspective on the origins and historical heritage of this often perplexing and ambiguous performing art. True to its claim as "all new," this edition includes none of the 30-plus essays in the first edition (ed. by Myron Nadel and Constance Gwen Nadel, 1970), many by respected dancer-choreographers (Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Alwin Nikolais, Erick Hawkins, Nora Kaye, John Butler). Instead the book offers 21 new chapters (organized in two sections: "Appreciating the World of Dance" and "The Dance Experience"), each of which brings a unique and dynamic point of view that does much to demystify the world of dance. World-renowned dancer Edward Villela contributes an energetic foreword to this volume, which provides a complex and focused view of what it is to be a dancer, what is involved in staging dance (chapters on costume and stage lighting are especially fine), how dance has evolved over time, and where dance fits in the current cultural spectrum. Like the first volume, this edition does not include any visual information--no photographs or plates--but it has a marvelous appendix of video, film, and Internet resources. ^BSumming Up: Essential.
