Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

Sound for Film and Television, Second Edition provides a thorough introduction to the fascinating field of recording, editing, mixing, and exhibiting film and television sound. It strikes a fine balance between aesthetic and technical content, combining theory and practice to approach sound as both an art and a science, as no other text has before. This edition includes new information on digital techniques as they have arisen in the industry, and expanded coverage of sound editing and design. Written by one of Hollywood's leading sound experts, Sound for Film and Television, Second Edition provides a solid grounding in all aspects of the sound process. Basic principles are presented with illustrations demonstrating how they affect the day-to-day activities on a film or television set, in the editing room, and in the mix room.

CHOICE Review

Holman balances the science of sound with production processes, aesthetic considerations, and practical applications for narrative, music video, and documentary. Early chapters cover the science of sound waves and their behavior, and the physiology of human hearing, stressing both "psychoacoustics" (subjective perception) and the "science" of objective sound. Production chapters cover microphones, recording, mixing, synchronization, transfers, editing, and exhibition. The author applies analog, FM, and digital recording, and postproduction principles to film and video. The book's greatest strength is its wealth of practical tips and examples of approaches to diverse sound challenges in feature films. Even experienced sound practitioners will learn techniques to improve their recording skills. The book clearly explains complex subject matter, and it contains useful charts (but would have benefited from more illustrations). The accompanying CD contains excellent examples of microphone polar patterns and editing "tricks," but the microphone comparisons are confusing and the inclusion of pink noise questionable. Comprehensive, up-to-date, and chockfull of information, this book clarifies issues that are unclear or ignored in other texts and has a good glossary. An excellent resource to be referred to repeatedly. Highly recommended for upper-level undergraduates through professional collections. L. A. Boruszkowski; Southern Illinois University at Carbondale
