Booklist Review

Here's a perhaps-just-a-bit-higher-profile entry in the Desert Storm book sweepstakes. The color photos and the sketches--provided by both photojournalists and armed forces artists--effectively portray the entire scope of the conflict, from the initial invasion of Kuwait by Iraq, through the deployment of Allied forces into the desert, to the return of the troops. The pictures depict American men and women in battle, the destruction caused by Scuds, Tomahawks, and other hardware, the fires raging in Kuwaiti oil fields, the reaction to the fighting back in the States (both pro and con), the sadness of learning that a loved one has died in battle, and the various leaders on both sides (Bush, Hussein, Cheney, Powell, Schwarzkopf, etc.). The main text by Peter David, an editor for The Economist of London, is supplemented by articles by five other journalists, the words providing an informative and responsible overview of what happened, why, and when. There will be plenty of books to come on the subject, but this commemorative edition should find a special, popular place in public libraries. ~--Martin Brady
