Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

This text introduces the basic equations of the theory of structures. Conventional presentations of these equations follow the ideas of elastic analysis, introduced nearly two hundred years ago. The book is written against the background of advances made in structural theory during the last fifty years, notably by the introduction of so-called plastic theory. The emphasis throughout is on the derivation and application of the structural equations, rather than on details of their solution (nowadays best done by computer), and the numerical examples are deliberately kept simple.

CHOICE Review

This book is a delightful, clear, brief but sophisticated, and insightful exposition of structural mechanics aimed at mechanical, civil, or architectural engineering undergraduates who have had introductory courses in statics and strength of materials. Students must be proficient in truss internal force calculations, beam stress and deflection calculations (determinate and indeterminate), and the notion of fully plastic beam moment. Heyman (formerly, Univ. of Cambridge) emphasizes the importance of plastic structural design, and applies this idea consistently to simple trusses, frames, and beams. This plastic approach is unique among structural mechanics undergraduate-level works. Chapters emphasize the strength approach in structural design (i.e., stresses), the stiffness approach (i.e., deflections), the elastic analysis (including reciprocal theorems and Castigliano's energy theorems), and the stability approach (i.e., buckling of straight or imperfect beams). The discussion on masonry structures, primarily the arch, is very clear. Appendixes present details of the principle of virtual work and the upper and lower plastic bound theorems. Heyman is well known for his earlier works; The Stone Skeleton (CH, Jan'96, 33-2758) is a classic exposition of masonry construction from the technical and historical perspectives. The book has no exercises, and the index is too brief (e.g., no entry for thrust line.) Summing Up: Highly recommended. All academic, technical program, and professional collections. J. Author notes provided by Syndetics

Jacques Heyman is former Head of the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge and the author of fourteen books, including The stone skeleton, Elements of the theory of structures, Structural analysis: a historical approach, Elements of stress analysis and the two-volume set, Plastic design of frames: Volume 1, Fundamentals and Volume 2, Applications, with Lord Baker. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Royal Academy of Engineering, and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects. He was a consulting engineer for a number of English cathedrals and a member of the Architectural Advisory Panel for Westminster Abbey and the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England. He also has served on many British Standards committees. Professor Heyman's The stone skeleton won the Choice Outstanding Academic Books Award in 1996.
