Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:
Authors Terry E. Miller and Andrew Shahriari take students around the world to experience the diversity of musical expression. World Music: A Global Journey, now in its third edition, is known for its breadth in surveying the world¿s major cultures in a systematic study of world music within a strong pedagogical framework.
As one prepares for any travel, each chapter starts with background preparation, reviewing the historical, cultural, and musical overview of the region. Visits to multiple ¿sites¿ within a region provide in-depth studies of varied musical traditions. Music analysis begins with an experimental "first impression" of the music, followed by an "aural analysis" of the sound and prominent musical elements. Finally, students are invited to consider the cultural connections that give the music its meaning and life.

CHOICE Review
Miller and Shahriari (both, Kent State Univ.) (1st ed., 2006) have written an impressive introductory resource for those who wish to explore musical genres around the globe. The layout, photographs, charts, accompanying CDs, and overall organization make for a reader-friendly guide that will be especially useful for the beginning student. The initial chapters provide a good rudimentary introduction to basic musical and cultural concepts. Subsequent chapters present snapshots of a multitude of musical genres and cultural settings, East and West. The integrated recordings are enhanced with listening guides, sometimes lacking in musical details but nonetheless providing useful visual aids for the listener. Although a more selective and musically detailed study would also be useful, this book is well researched and beautifully appointed. The cost may deter some, but one can learn a lot from this volume. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower- and upper-division undergraduates, including those in two-year programs. J. L. Stockton Lafayette CollegeAuthor notes provided by Syndetics
