Ritchie and Lewis successfully provide a guide to qualitative research for both social science students and professionals. They and the 12 contributors have current or past affiliations with the Qualitative Research Unit of Britain's largest independent social research organization, The National Centre for Social Research. The emphasis of the guide reflects the emphasis of the unit: "the design, conduct, and interpretation of research studies using in-depth interviews and focus groups." The contributors' experience gives the guide a sense of reality. Their observations should be valuable to researchers and policy makers who have had little experience with qualitative research.
