The second goal is to show the reader how theory and research are important to both the prevention and the treatment of substance abuse. CHOICE Review

First published, under Thombs's name only, some 25 years ago (CH, Oct'94, 32-1233), Introduction to Addictive Behaviors has a lot to offer health, human services, and psychology students. In putting together the 5th edition, Thombs (North Texas Health Science Center, Fort Worth) and Osborn (Kent State Univ.), both accomplished researchers and clinicians in addictions studies, found the right blend to appeal to all levels in this intellectual marketplace. With their systematic prose and pedagogical aids for enhancing readability--end-of-chapter summaries and review questions for each chapter--the authors help students master the addictions literature. The book appears to have been thoroughly updated since the last edition (2013), with the latest statistics covering the sharply spiraling rises of drug overdose deaths and newly emerging treatment techniques. The authors offer both a historical perspective on addictions treatment and wide-ranging coverage of the addictions realm--topics include alcohol and drugs, gambling, compulsive shopping, and sexual behavior. General readers can learn from this work, though its textbook format suggests readers of a more scholastic turn. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty and professionals; general readers. --William Feigelman, emeritus, Nassau Community College
