CHOICE Review

"Benchmarking" is defined by the author as "the continuous process of measuring products, services, and practices against the toughest competitors or those companies recognized as industry leaders." In essence this concept consists of establishing operating targets and productivity programs based on industry's best practices. In many respects the author has merely refined the planning-organizing-control loop and does not add significantly to the management literature. This work treats management primarily as an engineering activity, with little recognition of the complex social system and its impact on human behavior within the organization. -E.
