CHOICE Review

What better way to celebrate arguably the most self-indulgent museum buildings in America and Europe than to have the final shows of the last century and first shows of the new century be devoted to one of the most preeminently self-indulgent contemporary artists, Francesco Clemente (b. 1952, Naples). The nearly 200 works exhibited in both New York in Wright's building and in Bilbao in Gehry's are beautifully reproduced in this sumptuous catalog. The works are gathered into various sections, each of which is introduced by a poet, historian, or other admirer of the artist, such as Gus van Sant, Robert Creeley, and Dennison (Guggenheim Museum, New York), who also organized the exhibition. Most works are accompanied by entries, and many by poems, some of which are by artists such as Allen Ginsburg. The book is more than 500 pages long, and the design leaves much empty space between and around the images, which fits with the poetic themes of free association, dreamscape, daydreaming, etc. Supplementary material includes a very good 40-page chronology, a fine selected exhibition history, a good selected bibliography, and an index of reproductions. All of this is welcome and useful material, but it is the images that are most striking: sexuality, body, India, portraits, etc. Highly recommended. General readers; undergraduates through faculty.
