CHOICE Review

Wentz provides comprehensive coverage of the developing field of hazardous waste management. He presents basic scientific and engineering principles along with summaries of pertinent legislation and illustrative case studies. Institutional requirements are addressed initially in an introduction to hazardous waste management, risk assessment, environmental legislation, and specific features of the Toxic Substances Control Act, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, and the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act. A discussion of hazardous waste characterization requirements and principles and practices related to waste minimization and resource recovery is followed by an examination of hazardous waste treatment via chemical, physical, and biological means, and thermal processes. Multiple regulations for hazardous waste transportation are summarized. Finally, waste disposal and environmental concerns are covered in separate chapters on ground-water contamination, landfill disposal, injection well disposal, process selection and facility siting, and site remediation. Suitable for the senior undergraduate or the beginning graduate student; however, managers, engineers, scientists, government officials, and the concerned public will also find this book helpful in providing an overview of hazardous waste management concerns. -L.
