If only one book could be purchased to represent Persian art, this would be the right selection. The 20 authors have skillfully provided illuminating text that covers and contrasts artistic contributions both by historical time period and specific media employed. Comprehensive coverage includes chapters on early art, art of the Sasanians, coins, architecture, textiles, metalwork, painting, ceramics, calligraphy, and more. Excellent, clear examples have been chosen for the 150 color plates and 250 black-and-white illustrations to display panoramic layouts and elegant detail-work. Authoritative essays by 19 scholars survey the arts from the Neolithic period to the 19th century in the geographic area of what is today Iran. The first major settlers in that area were the Elamites around 3000 BCE; in the sixth century BCE the Achaemenian empire emerged, followed by that of the Parthians and then the Sasanians. The book contains beautiful color photos (some never before reproduced) and good bibliographies. The first five chapters focus on the little-known Elamite art as well as the arts of the Achaemenians, Parthians, and Sasanians, offering a concise summary of the state of knowledge. Less satisfying are chapters 6 through 19. It is unfortunate that only 81 pages discuss ancient Persian art while the bulk of the volume is devoted to Islamic art in Persia, with separate chapters on Islamic architecture, carpets, textiles, metalwork, jewelry, coins, painting, lacquer work, ceramics, tile work, glass, and calligraphy. Such arbitrary division leads to confusion for the uninitiated reader and to endless duplication of historical information. Nonetheless, the book is a rich source of data on significant artistic productions that are largely unfamiliar to Western readers. Level: upper-division and above. -J. Gutmann, Wayne State University
