About 3500 years ago, the Chinese accidentally discovered that wood ash produced surprisingly varied and pleasing ceramic glazes. Even wood from the same species of tree harvested just miles apart can produce subtle variations. Well-known British potter Rogers has written perhaps the best work on this ancient art in this book, first released in Britain in 1992 and now published here in a revised edition. From the history of wood ash glazes to modern ash glaze recipes and the artists who use them, he manages to combine scientific detail with brilliantly illustrated artistic inspiration.
