Polke, Penck, Richter, Baselitz, Nauman, Marden, Haring, Basquiat, Clemente, Longo, Salle, Schnabel, the Starns, and most others in the canon of Postmodernism are the subject of this book, which was created to accompany the exhibition of the same title at the Museum of Modern Art. The work explores the expanded definition of drawing in the 1970s and the '80s as well as the renewal of interest in the iconic and allegorical. Rose's essay is also a powerful definition of a kind of post-everything, fin-de-millenium aesthetic musing. The frequent occurrence of the words "despair," "regression," "redemption messianic," "apocalyptic," and "absolute" suggests the teleological orientation of this work. Nevertheless, it is a well-written, thoughtful, serious study of some of the more significant social and artistic tendencies of our time. Proponents of optimistic humanism please wait until 2001.-J.
