CHOICE Review

This book provides a balanced introduction to microbiology, including all major topics ranging from microbial structure and metabolism to disease, immunology, and applied microbiology. One of the authors, Paul VanDemark, is a contributor to a well-known microbiology laboratory manual. The writing is clear and the good-quality illustrations are helpful. There is an adequate index and glossary; however, only a few general references are provided at chapter ends. The treatment is suitable for undergraduates who need to become familiar with a particular area of microbiology, but it is not sufficiently detailed about many topics to provide much more than a general introduction. Two other introductory books, R.F. Boyd's General Microbiology (1984) and M.J. Pelczar, E.C.S. Chan, and N.R. Krieg's Microbiology (5th ed., 1986), provide a similar breadth of coverage with somewhat greater depth, and might therefore be more satisfactory additions to a college library collection.-L.M.
