CHOICE Review

This book presents an almost insuperable problem to a reviewer constrained by a need for brevity. The disciplinary range and scope represented are vast. The basic question posed is reflected in the title. The summary answer: Yes, on balance, work is being transformed, but the transformation is not all-inclusive. Technological advances and increasing internationalization have combined to produce competitive forces that in some areas have created major changes in work and in workers. At the same time, the changes seen are neither universal nor viewed as inevitable. As in any collection, quality and readability vary between and among the 16 chapters. By the same token, not all readers will be equally interested in all of the subject matter covered. The editor's efforts to bind individual contributions to the common theme are reflected in cross-referencing throughout. That chapter notes are collected in an appendix adds to the continuity of the work. The bibliography is extensive, the index brief but adequate. The book should prove to have broad interest not only for students and researchers, but also for the general public. Recommended for academic and public libraries. -E.
