CHOICE Review

Among the early applications of electronics was that of communications. With advances in the art of electronic design and the development of new electronic devices came corresponding changes in the design of communications equipment. Smith's book, on modern design techniques, is written as a textbook for an upper-division undergraduate or graduate level engineering course. The material ranges from the latest techniques in receiver design-such as low noise amplifiers, frequency synthesis, and digital phase-locked loops-to transmitter design. A basic understanding of transistor circuit theory is assumed but no previous studies of communications circuits is necessary. Although the material is complex, Smith's style makes the reading easy and the flow of logic clear. The book is well illustrated with circuit diagrams and data plots. Each chapter contains problems, references, and suggested readings. Specification sheets for a variety of transistors and integrated circuits make up the appendixes.
