CHOICE Review

Among the standard reference works in the field of antennas for many years has been the two-volume work Antenna Theory (CH, Sep '69), by R.E. Collin and F.J. Zucker. Now Collin has brought out a new book that presents the essentials of antenna theory and radiowave propagation in a carefully thought-out manner that should particularly appeal to systems engineers in the field of communications as well as to antenna specialists. Collin emphasizes the physics of the processes involved but does not short change the practical aspects of design-a balance that leads to an extremely useful book. The text is split about three to one between antennas and propagation with the former getting the larger share. Each chapter contains a set of problems reflecting the fact that the book grew out of lectures given by the author at Case Western Reserve University. There are footnotes to reference material on specialized topics and a bibliography. The material covered includes many standard topics including dipoles and arrays and there is an excellent chapter on aperture-type systems, particularly reflectors. Both analytic and numerical techniques are covered. Overall, an outstanding work: highly recommended for inclusion in all college and university libraries.-B.
