Muccio outlines in clear and lucid prose many of the processes of manufacturing plastics, developing the concepts of plastic technology from feedstock to manufactured goods. All definitions, e.g., of thermosets, thermoplastic, polymers, monomers, additives, fillers, colorants, and other terms, are paired with quintessential examples relative to this industry. Processing descriptions with elegant diagrams aid readers in understanding blow molding, injection molding, composite processing, casting, and extrusion, as well as equipment design. The author is careful to explain the critical roles that temperature, time, and pressure play in the successful processing of plastics, and introduces the methods and equipment used in the variation and monitoring of these parameters.
