CHOICE Review

An extremely thorough and detailed treatise on hydraulic fluid power systems. The authors are eminently qualified authorities on the subject through both industrial and academic experience. The book is intended to fill the gap between basically theoretical reference works on hydraulics and control, and the mainly descriptive books that emphasize a single type of equipment. This rather specialized topic is covered thoroughly in chapters dealing with pumps, hydraulic valves, actuators, fluids, hydraulic system design, maintenance, and control systems. The writing is clear and direct from a practical viewpoint, with an excellent combination of both descriptive and quantitative material liberally interspersed with numerous diagrams. Quantitative relations, illustrated by examples, and a list of questions and exercises (with answers) in an appendix enhance the value of the book as a teaching text as well as an excellent practical reference on hydraulic power systems. -R.
