CHOICE Review

Although it is not clearly a handbook, this is a valuable volume for a wide range of professionals, and qualifies more as a series of case studies. It is not uniformly edited and the pagination is very inconvenient, but it offers a broad array of case studies in a variety of disciplines. There are sections on risk assessment and management in general, hazardous waste management, pesticides, safety analysis, ecological risk assessment, international risk management, and risk communication. The section on ecological risk is more rigorous than that on health risk, although there are some interesting vignettes in the latter. The authors of some health sections seem only vaguely familiar with such controversial areas as comparative risk communication. On the other hand, there is a very thorough consideration of risk communication that does indeed merit the "handbook" designation. Overall, the book is a valuable, though uneven, compendium of facts, pulled together from a variety of sources. An appendix provides addresses for many environmental organizations, but the selections (or rather, omissions) are puzzling. A disadvantage is that there are very few references from 1993 or later. In summary, unique among "risk" books and worth reading. General; undergraduate; graduate; professional. J. Burger; Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick
