CHOICE Review

Warren's elegantly written book (1st ed., CH, Apr'94) is filled with brilliant scientific insights and interesting and clever anecdotes. His love of mathematics furthers the student's understanding of the physical chemical concepts, and he offers sufficient examples to introduce the reader to mathematical techniques such as differentiation, chain rule, integrals, and how they are used to solve actual problems encountered in the study of the physical science. Warren (Princeton Univ.) presents very concisely the topics of Newton's Laws of Motion forces, kinetics, properties of waves, statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, and the interaction of radiation and matter; he then relates these to a clear mathematical treatment without the confusing jargon encountered in many of the texts devoted to each of these topics. A must supplemental resource for all serious college chemistry students, and one that they can consult throughout their undergraduate studies.
