CHOICE Review

Lappin has chosen a descriptive rather than a theoretical approach to inorganic redox chemistry, using a wide variety of examples to demonstrate the richness of this topic. He assumes the reader has had previous experience with inorganic reaction mechanisms, although the first chapter briefly reviews some background information. The heart of the book is a thorough discussion of inner-sphere and outer-sphere charge transfer reactions. The final two chapters cover more advanced topics, mainly intramolecular electron transfer in mixed valence compounds and reactions that involve multiple electron transfer. A short problem set is included with each chapter. This excellent survey should be quite useful not only to its intended audience of advanced chemistry undergraduates and beginning graduate students but also to many others who wish to review recent progress in this area. The copious literature references and extensive tables of kinetic and thermodynamic data make this book appropriate as either a text or a reference. Recommended. Undergraduate through faculty. H. E.
