CHOICE Review

Software engineering is the establishment and use of sound engineering principles in the development of computer software. As part of the series "Advances in Systems, Control, and Information Engineering," this well-written book is designed to serve the practicing software engineer. It includes short articles, diagrams, and references. Some of the bibliographies at the ends of articles contain references from the early 1980s, which seem dated, but their inclusion is probably a reflection of the time it takes to compile a work like this. The subject indexing can make it difficult to locate concepts. For example, Computer Integrated Manufacturing-Open System Architecture (CIM-OSA) can be found in the article on compatibility and standards for software, but not in the index under computer integrated manufacturing, or under open systems. This work has a European focus, and lacks the contributions of some notable names, but makes a clear presentation of this developing field. As the title implies, the entries in this source are more concise than those of the Software Engineer's Reference Book, ed. by John McDermid (CH, Jan'92).
