CHOICE Review

The authors combine their teaching experience to bring together a book designed both as a classroom text and as a ``handbook for robotic technicians.'' The organization of the book makes it a valuable addition for library reference in the rapidly expanding and very dynamic field of robotics and automated systems; the instructional modular format lends itself to self-instruction and ready reference. The answers to the review questions are a strong aid to self-instruction and provide application of the concepts discussed. The authors begin with very basic information that requires little technical background knowledge. The emphasis on applications is seen in the detailed development of techniques, such as programming, followed by exercises in the review problems at the chapters' end. Unfortunately, the index did not receive proper attention, thereby making it difficult to locate subsets of concepts or techniques as required in a handbook. The simplicity of illustrations enhances understanding, but at times the discussion begs for pictorial aid. The book's coverage of the state of robotics, of the concepts of robotic usage, and of the various systems employed to drive them-controls and programming, interfacing, sensing-makes this a valuable reference source for college libraries.-J.A.
