The natural beauty and practicality of stone is displayed here with artistry by the talented craftsman who authored Country Blacksmithing [BKL O 1 81]. Starting with the fundamentals of a stone wall, McRaven offers explicit data on more than a dozen structures created from natural stones, including house foundations, frameworks for windows and doors, a root cellar, a barn, and an arched bridge, with additional instructions on locating, moving, and setting stones. McRaven does not address the issue of cost, for he focuses on recycling or using rock "on your own acreage." This updating of McRaven's original Building with Stone (Lippincott, 1980) should find a ready audience since so many homeowners and builders are searching for just the sort of originality and classic features illustrated here.
