Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

This volume presents a thorough discussion of systems of linear equations and their solutions. Vectors and matrices are introduced as required and an account of determinants is given. Great emphasis has been placed on keeping the presentation as simple as possible, with many illustrative examples. While all mathematical assertions are proved, the student is led to view the mathematical content intuitively, as an aid to understanding.

The text treats the coordinate geometry of lines, planes and quadrics, provides a natural application for linear algebra and at the same time furnished a geometrical interpretation to illustrate the algebraic concepts.

Bibliography: (page 221) and index.

CHOICE Review

Cohn reviews all the basic topics in linear algebra, beginning with vectors and vector spaces, but quickly moving to matrices and systems of linear equations. Although the book is not written in definition-theorem-proof format, theorems are highlighted and many of them are proved, and new terms are printed in boldface. There are examples throughout, and the many exercises at the end of each chapter contain both computational and theoretical problems. The book contains historical references and is easily readable. The last two chapters contain various applications drawn from algebra, geometry, calculus, mechanics, and economics. The level of presentation is appropriate for undergraduates. J. H. Ellison; Grove City College
