As a handbook, this volume is intended to provide the engineer, technician, engineering manager, or student with a background to a complete digital system, with the eventual emphasis on the design of a digital radio-relay system. Although there are other modes of digital transmission, namely cable, optical fiber, satellite, Townsend deals only with the digital radio-relay system. A model of a digital system is first established, and then each block within the model is discussed--this includes a description of the equipment used, its function and operation performance objectives, impairments that may occur, various equipments available, and testing to verify operation. In later chapters Townsend deals with design, derivation of performance and availability objectives, and cost. Exercises are given at chapter ends.
