Goya's highly imaginative drawings receive the scholarly spotlight in this impressive catalog of the first exhibition devoted exclusively to drawings from Goya's eight private sketchbooks, which were dispersed after his death in 1828. More than 115 drawings from 35 collections are shown for the first time as full-page, actual-size color reproductions except for drawings from the largest album. The book includes introductory texts on Goya's art and draftsmanship, commentaries, and texts on each album. Artist and art critic Tom Lubbock contributes a meditative study on examples of human vulnerability and resolve in Goya's imagery. A monument to Goya's astonishing imagination and emotional force, the drawings show poses, motifs, and emotions that reach full expression in his paintings and prints. This handsome volume accompanied the exhibition of Goya's drawings held at the Hayward Gallery in London, organized by the well-respected Goya scholar Wilson-Bareau. Unlike his prints, which exist in multiples and are well known and frequently reproduced, Goya's drawings are private and unique works, many of which remain in private hands. Altogether, in the course of 30 years, Goya created eight albums of varying length and size that originally included some 550 drawings. These drawings, now widely dispersed throughout European and American collections, both public and private, are the least known of this artist's extensive oeuvre. The exhibition is the first to reunite a major group of sheets from all eight albums. Wilson-Bareau and artist-art critic Tom Lubbock contribute succinct, introductory essays to the catalog, which consists primarily of superb-quality, full-page reproductions of 117 brush and ink, and black crayon drawings. Full catalog entries on each sheet and a select bibliography are found in the back. Goya is a fascinating and always surprising artist: these are intriguing, often satirical, sometimes unsettling images that will equally interest the specialist and curious layperson.
