Booklist Review

The Internet's popularity burgeons as virtual throngs of everyday people jump online. Guides to the network need to be user friendly as well as comprehensive. Manger's succeeds in providing sufficient information in easily understood language, providing, according to Manger, "end-user applications and tangible public services" instead of "network technicalities." Its chapters describe how to access the USENET bulletin board system, locate and download information, and use E-mail. Handy tips give new users a leg up on the more seasoned lurkers, and in addition to the main text and diagrams, Manger includes a handy glossary of frequently used terms and a lengthy list of news groups. Since there are so many fine one-volume Internet guides around today, perhaps Manger's title reaches a bit, but the book is certainly a fine one. For users who want to check out the Internet's wild side, Wood vividly shows how much fun can be found there. Much of his book includes descriptions of the bawdier and goofier clubs users can join; in the chapter "NetSex," for instance, Wood describes what goes on in such bulletin board discussion groups as "alt.personals.spanking" and others that receive cursory listing at most in many more mainstream guides. Wood also discusses a wealth of video games, photographs, and science fiction items, according them iconographic ratings to indicate their relative worthiness, and he provides an uncommonly candid critique of the major commercial services (Delphi, AOL, CompuServe). Although all the best Internet guides are free of technobabble, it's nice to read a writer like Wood, who not only knows the scene but can survey it with such a mischievous grin. --Aaron Cohen
