New York City graffiti artist turned art world sensation, Jean-Michel Basquiat was a self-taught African American painter who died in 1988 of a drug overdose at the age of 27. In the ten years before his death, he showed at prestigious galleries in the United States and Europe and painted collaborative works with Andy Warhol and Francesco Clemente. This Italian catalog accompanies a Basquiat exhibition in Trieste and features fine reproductions of major Basquiat paintings, along with portrait photographs of the artist, a chronology of his life, and essays and interviews in both Italian and English translation. It provides a good overview of Basquiat's life and work, though the translation is sometimes quirky and the text concentrates more on Basquiat's activities in Europe than does Richard Marchall's Jean-Michel Basquiat (Abrams, 1995). As evidenced by the film and written accounts of Basquiat's life that have been appearing in the past few years, both large public libraries and academic collections can expect interest in this artist.ÄKathryn Wekselman, Univ. of Cincinnati Lib. The short-lived American painter Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-88) was a prodigy and autodidact. Of Haitian and Puerto Rican heritage, he began as a raw New York City "phenom" graffiti artist signing alone or with Al Diaz as "SAMO." He subsequently devised a solo style almost prehistoric in appearance, or perhaps art brut with its comic-style abbreviated draftsmanship and sophisticated mixture of half drawing and painting. Drink and drugs set him off painting at a furious pace. Basquiat was marketed from the top by several leading dealers. He was a part of the club scene, and found collaborations and friendships: i.e., Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, and Andy Warhol. In his short life he had many significant shows in the US and abroad. In fact, this catalog for the Museo Revoltella, Trieste, Italy show of 1999 was created by Basquiat's dealer Bruno Bischofberger, who contributes the preface and a short essay as well as providing the lenders and sources for 110 Basquiat works, many collaborative paintings with Warhol and others. This should not substitute for Phoebe Hoban's Basquiat: A Quick Killing in Art (1998), which remains the finest study of the tragic postmodern artist. Color plates; many photographs of Basquiat.
