Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

Legal requirements for health and safety at work impose duties on all those working in laboratories. This revised and updated handbook provides information and practical guidance for laboratory workers and for all those who have responsibility for laboratory management. It details how duties can be met sensibly through safety management, planning and training. Additionally, the book provides a reference listing the hazardous properties of approximately 400 flammable, explosive, corrosive and toxic substances or groups of substances commonly found in labs.

Includes bibliographical references and indexes.

CHOICE Review

A handbook in two parts: (1) a general discussion of various aspects of chemical safety, and (2) pertinent chemical information about specific laboratory compounds. Part 1 includes chapters on legislation, safety planning and laboratory design, fire protection, reactive chemical hazards, toxicology, health hazards, radiation safety, electrical hazards, and US chemical laboratory safety standards. The chapters are well thought out and specific to laboratory situations; as a result, the information they contain is readable and understandable to any individual familiar with laboratories. Although all chapters are essential to the handbook, those on chemical hazards and first aid are particularly useful in combination with the list of hazardous compounds constituting Part 2. The step-by-step directions for administering first aid in response to chemical accidents should be required reading for everyone working in a laboratory. Part 2 contains useful information about 1,339 individual chemical compounds, including limit values, toxic effects, first aid, fire hazard, spillage disposal, and references. The information is clear and concise. Cross-references for compounds with multiple names are listed in the index but not in the text; nevertheless, the indexes are well done.
