Sir Charles Lyell (1797--1875) was one of the most renowned geologists of the nineteenth century. His Principles of Geology (also reissued in this series) laid the foundations of evolutionary biology, and greatly influenced Darwin. Lyell's most important contribution to modern geology was his refining and popularising of the concept of uniformitarianism, the idea that the earth has been formed through slow-acting geological forces over billions of years. These volumes, first published in 1845, are the result of Lyell's 1841 lecture tour across the United States and Canada, in the course of which he made many observations on the formation of the American landscape. Using the popular format of a travel diary, Lyell provides vivid and detailed descriptions of North American geology, with discussions of important geological sites. Volume 1 contains his travels from Boston to North Carolina.

Published to accompany the exhibition Donald Judd. The Early Work 1955-1968, from 5 May to 21 July 2002 in the Kunsthalle Bielefeld ; and from 31 January 2002 to 27 April 2003 in the Menil Collection, Houston.

CHOICE Review

Anyone who has unsuccessfully pondered the aesthetic blandishments of the art movement known as Minimalism will find little in this publication to alleviate the burden of incomprehension. As hermeneutically obscurantist as the art it purports to analyze, the text is as impenetrable as sculptor Judd's metallic cubes and rectangles. Lacking any form of human resonance--save the claim that it occupies the same space as the viewer--Minimalism is so insistently tedious as to make a virtue of even the most banal art forms. This publication, a monograph on the early works of the magister ludi of the movement, Donald Judd, is comprised of a biography of the artist together with a statement of authorial intention. The latter is so filled with aesthetic cant and philosophical musings as to resist the most determined effort to extract anything resembling coherent meaning. If the intent of this book is to epater la bourgeoisie, it has succeeded beyond the artist and author's wildest aspirations. Not for academic libraries. R. L. McGrath Dartmouth College
