CHOICE Review

The original edition of this remarkably thorough and authoritative work was introduced at the Frankfurt/Main Book Fair, October 2000. This English translation introduces (as did its German-language counterpart) each step of the printing process in sequential form, from fundamentals of typography and graphic design through prepress, presswork, electronic media, and finishing methods. This comprehensive approach, expertly edited, is both authoritative and readable. Several major sections include printing technologies, prepress, computer technologies, hybrid systems, print finishing systems, material and data flow, production strategies, electronic media, special topics, and appendix. This is certainly the most accessible source for current information regarding digital technologies and their impact on presswork and printing. Perhaps because the book was sponsored by Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (internationally respected as one of the foremost and most respected manufacturers of printing presses), the book's emphasis is on prepress methods, presswork, presses, and printing systems. An excellent resource for those involved or learning about printing management, print production, or any phase of the graphic communication industry. Beautifully printed in Germany; graced with hundreds of full-color illustrations; useful CD-ROM (permitting full-text searching of both book and illustrations). Strongly recommended to libraries serving technical programs in printing, graphic design, and communications technology. Lower-division undergraduates through professionals; two-year technical program students. R. M. Labuz Mohawk Valley Community College
