CHOICE Review

Goertzel (Univ. of Nevada), author of The Structure of Intelligence (1993), defends the thesis that "mental process is itself a form of evolution." Arguments are derived from a number of disciplines, including mathematics and computers, with the result that not everyone will be familiar with the ideas from all of them. Despite Goertzel's best attempts to keep the arguments simple and intuitive, rigor dictates a certain degree of difficulty, which will most certainly be beyond the capabilities of most undergraduates, even at the upper levels. For graduate collections, the work is recommended as a rich source of ideas and arguments on this most vexed of contemporary problems. Useful references and index; well bound. R. L.
